When you sign up to become a Driving Instructor with Pass 1st, you’ll receive support and guidance right the way through the process. Our Driving Instructor Trainers are calm and relaxed, believing this is the way to get you through your driving instructor training quicker.  You can start your training as soon as you receive your successful ADI application.

Minimum requirements for becoming an ADI

You must be age 21 or over

You must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years

You must have your own vehicle which is less than 3 years old

Your eyesight must meet the minimum legal requirement for driving

Training and Working with Pass 1st

9 Steps to Becoming an ADI

When you join the Pass 1st team as an PDI we'll give you all the support and guidance you need to become fully qualified and start teaching. Start here and follow the pathway to becoming an ADI.

    Start your ADI Application

    Start the process of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor by applying at the gov.uk website.

  2. 2

    Apply for a DBS check

    Apply for a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) early as it can take a few weeks to be completed.

  3. 3

    Theory Training (Part One)

    Complete Part One of your ADI training and pass the Theory and Hazard Perception test.

  4. 4

    40 Hours Driving Instructor Training

    Get real experience and fulfil 40 hours driving instructor training.

  5. 5

    Practical Driving Test (Part Two)

    Complete a test of your driving ability.

  6. 6

    20 hours Driving Instructor Training

    Carry out a further 20 hours of Driving Instructor training to build on your experience.

  7. 7

    Instructional Ability Test (Part Three)

    Pass the final part of your Driving Instructor training - the instructional ability test.

  8. 8

    Become a Qualified ADI

    You are now a qualified driving instructor and can start advertising your business.
